For Christmas 2017, Laura bought me a tiny A6 moleskine sketchbook and a set of fine line pens. I started doodling in this sketchbook, filling it with places I’d rather be than the library, whilst I studied in Edinburgh for my art teaching degree. A style started to emerge where bold, straight lines would mingle with more natural forms. I mostly drew hills and animals. @Highland_Doodles was started on instagram. I wanted to try and create a drawing a day. I was inspired by artists such as Derek The Deliman and enjoyed drawing small scale, whimsical illustrations. As you flick through my early work, try and spot different aspects that I’ve taken forward into my newest work.

Sketches

It always started with a rough pencil sketch. Moleskine sketch book paper is particular enjoyable to draw on. It is ultra smooth which lends itself to the intricacy of my drawings.

“I wanted to try and create a drawing everyday.”

If you have followed my latest work, you’ll notice many little similarities that I’ve taken forward and used from this sketchbook. Have a look through the photographs of my sketchbook. See if you can spot something familiar.

This little piece was a turning point in my work. It’s based on a photograph of mine taken when exploring The Quiraing. It’s other-worldly landscape is how I imagined Mars to look. When I added in the over sized moon I really enjoy how it changed the atmosphere entirely.
